Jess the charity challenge queen on Celebrity Treasure Island
Brave founder Jess Tyson is competing in TVNZ's Celebrity Treasure Island and she's been smashing the charity challenges winning putea, money, for Brave! If you're new to the game, every day one team gets to take part in a charity challenge on the island where the winner wins $5,000 for charity. So far she's won three challenges, or $15k, already.
In the first challenge Jess had to wear a dentist mouth opener while her fellow contestant, dancing star, Candy Lane, had to guess phrases coming out of Jess' mouth. Both made it to the final and Jess ended up taking it out. In the second challenge her team Repo had to play musical chairs blind folded. Then after the teams changed and Jess moved to Katipō the charity challenge meant contestants had to blow up a balloon and eat a banana out of a bucket full of water! Jess amazed us all by winning that one too!
She's since become captain of team Katipō and has been a major asset to her team in the face off challenges! But the big question is, can she take out the entire game to win $100k for Brave? Watch TVNZ 2 every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday to find out, or watch on demand here.

Mental Health Awareness Week social media challenge
Brave joined forces with the Mental Health Foundation to raise awareness about the importance of kōrero as a part of Mental Health Awareness Week. This year's theme was take time to kōrero/mā te kōrero, ka ora - a little chat can go a long way. Throughout the week we invited people to take part in the social media challenge, to snap and share a photo based on the daily challenge. This involved people to look back at their favourite memories, explore nature. share words of kindness and catch up with friends.
Even though MHAW is over we still need to look after our mental health everyday of the year by keeping up the kōrero with our loved ones, especially if we are going through any struggles! The little, everyday conversations we have are surprisingly important – and they make a big difference to our mental health. Over time, these small chats create meaningful connections, help us understand each other better and ensure we have people we can count on when times are tough.
If you’ve noticed you’re really not feeling yourself, or you’re worried someone you care about needs some tautoko, there is help available:

Secondary school visits!
Our main project at Brave is visiting high schools in New Zealand to educate Year 11 to Year 13 students about sexual harm, safe relationships and how to find help. We have presented to many schools and community groups around Aotearoa so far including Whanganui, Porirua, New Plymouth, Auckland, Rotorua, Northland, Nelson and Christchurch.
Topics talked about in the presentation:
- What sexual harm and violence is
- Healthy relationships and consent
- How to find help from national and regional specialist sexual violence support services
- How to stay safe online
- Jess Tyson’s own experience overcoming being a victim of sexual abuse and how having counselling helped her heal from the experience and live a happy, successful life.
If you know of a school any where in NZ please get in touch by emailing us at [email protected].
